In sickness and in health
I never really stop and think about this. I’ve never really been sick (knock on wood) I’ve never been hospitalized per se, although I did have day surgery for a hernia once.
For some reason, the thought came to me about how separate our minds and our bodies are. There are so many autonomic functions in our body and if any of them goes out of whack it could be potentially fatal.
I remembered when I got an EKG the last time I started training for a marathon. There’s this little flap in your heart, I think it’s called a valve, that keeps blood flowing in the right direction.
Imagine if that valve stopped working properly.
You can’t will it into working properly again. You can’t feel it working, you can’t feel it not working, but I bet you would feel the effects of it not working properly.
Then I thought about how our bodies decay naturally over time, just from normal use.
I can’t imagine what it must be like to have a serious illness like cancer, where your body is doing something against itself and your mind can’t do anything to stop it.
This whole exercise made me think about the whole “mortal coil” thing.
I don’t know why I had this thought, nor why it’s still on my mind, but I wanted to share it with y’all in hopes that it’ll go away. Maybe it’s in the forefront of my mind because I’m trying to get in better shape and in better health and the thought of “what have I done to myself” is just more prevalent.
