This week, I found 2 new running routes out at Purgatory Creek park in San Marcos, TX. Of course, the biggest plus that these routes have is that they are along new parts of the trail that I haven’t gotten bored with. Always a plus.

I gotta tellya, the second route scared me a little. It was late in the day, the sun was starting to go down and there I was, in the woods totally lost. I had to find a clearing so I could use Google maps to find myself and plot a route out of the shiggy. It was cool.

As far as distances, the first route is 2.47 miles while the second came in at 2.81 miles.
Not bad for a little metropolitan park like this. The really cool thing, is that there are plenty of other trails out there to explore. I lost count of how many trails I intersected while I was out there running. Especially when I was on the second route.
I should mention, on the map, it shows that there is a body of water on the trail. It’s not really a body of water.

Dam, not water
Speaking of the second outing, while I was out there, I was thinking about a conversation that I had with mah hunnay, as well as something that I read on an ultra runner’s blog. I’m not sure how to address it, so here it goes:
The only way to become a better trail runner (or runner in general) is to get out and run on trail. All of the body pump and power pump classes that I’ve been doing are fine and all, and although the classes help me with cross training and strengthening my core, they won’t really help me become a better runner. Only more running can help me become a better runner.
There will come a day, when I’ll have to give up going to Body Pump at the YMCA, because I need to spend more time on trail.

Trail purgatory park
Sad, but true. I really enjoy going to those classes at the YMCA. Plus, it seems like the other people in my classes are starting to see me as the guy that does the classes with them, instead of that guy in the class with them. It’s a subtle, but real difference.

New Route #1 - 2.47 miles

Route #2 - 2.81 miles
Just thought I’d share the new routes with y’all. In case you’re wanting to retrace my steps, both days I went in a clockwise direction.
