Purgatory Creek Park Run With A Heart Rate Monitor

I made it out to Purgatory Creek park for a run on July 1st. There was only 1 car there, at 6pm, when there are usually 8-9 cars parked there. Not surprising given that it’s a holiday weekend, however, I was expecting to see at least 4-5 cars there.

Anyway, this was my first run in almost 2 weeks. I’ve been taking a bit of a break from running, testing out swimming instead given the summer temperatures. Although I enjoy swimming, I must say that right now, I prefer running. Even in the heat.

My legs felt great, none of the heaviness that I had the last time I was out here.

The temperature was a relatively cool 96 degrees, according to my car’s thermometer.

Notice the trip odometer reading? I think Hilda, that’s my car’s name, is trying to tell me something.

I covered the now standard east loop. I really like this little loop trail, I kept stopping to take pictures, so my average pace was really slow. That, and I wasn’t feeling like running, so I walked pretty much the entire first quarter mile. That’s when I, to quote Forest Gump “I just felt like running.”

This was also my first run with a heart rate monitor. It’s one of those that has a band that you put around your chest and sends a signal to a wristwatch type device.

I’m still trying to figure out how the thing works and if there’s a way for me to have the thing keep track of the peak rate etc. As it was, I kept looking at it every time it beeped, which was annoying.

I thought the band around my chest would be annoying, but I couldn’t even tell that I had it on. The other thing, is that it has a calorie meter, but I couldn’t figure out how to make it work.

Stats:
Distance: 1.79 Miles
Temp: 96 Degrees
Peak Heart Rate: 207 bpm * this seems really high to me. The average was around 165 bpm.
Estimated Calories burned: 422 * from Runkeeper, not the heart rate monitor.
