Since I had to work late in the evening, I decided to head out for a quick noontime run at Purgatory Creek Park in San Marcos. When I headed out to the park, the temperature was a relatively cool 98 degrees. I was actually looking forward to running in sub 100 degree temperatures since we’ve had something like 40 consecutive days of 100 degree plus weather.
It was not to be. By the time I was done with my run, the temperature had gone up to 103 degrees.

I can't believe I'm out here in the heat either
I’m not really sure what happened, but I forgot to start my heart rate monitor and my stop watch. So, for the first 4 minutes or so, I had no tracking of my heart rate and calorie burn.
Fortunately, I remembered to start the Runkeeper, so that at least went well.
In the years that I’ve been coming out here, besides birds I’ve only seen the occasional deer and the occasional squirrel out here. I’ve known that there are other animals out here just from all the different types of droppings out there, but I’d never seen anything else out here until today.

Dead critter on trail
I don’t know what that is, or was rather, but it was a poignant reminder that the little critters that live out here are hurting in this crazy hot and dry weather.
