I had another great run last night on the greenbelt. I had to make myself take walk breaks instead of my usual “can’t wait to take a walk break” mode. It got dark on me and since I didn’t have a flash light, there were parts where I had to walk cuz I couldn’t see where I was stepping, nor could I see where the trail was. Any way, I went for about 4.5 miles which was a little shorter than I wanted, but better than nothing.
After I was done, I had an epiphany.
I need to increase my mileage, drastically. After all, how can I expect to run 31 miles in a day, when I haven’t been running at least that much a week, right? I already knew this, but I actually bought it last night. I dunno if that makes sense to anyone but me, but that’s how I’m going to explain it.
So, beginning next week, I’m going to ratchet up the mileage. I plan to be at 30 miles a week within the next 3 weeks, and then basically add an extra 5 miles a week until I’m at 50 miles a week. Hopefully, I’ll remain injury free and be able to keep up that mileage until around Sunmart time, which I’ll taper for. After Sunmart, I’ll kick it up a notch and shoot for Bandera 100k. After Bandera, I’ll do that short race in Austin known as the Austin marathon. After that, maybe the Old Pueblo 50? I went to elementary school in Tucson, so I’d love to get back and see if I recognize anything, I prolly won’t.
Calling a marathon a short race seems almost arrogant, but when compared to a 100k, it is a short race, wouldn’t you agree?

Sure a marathon is a shorter race than 100k. But yeah it does seem a little arrogant to compare the two until you’ve run one, or both.
If I remember correctly my daily run in marathon training was 6 miles, with a long run on the weekend. There were a couple days off in a week but I don’t remember exactly the schedule.
If training for a 100k involves more training miles than a marathon, there’s no way I could do it. Just not enough hours in the day!
I’ve done marathons before, that’s why I’m going for an ultra.
