Gastric Bypass Surgery

One of my friends sent around an email that talked about a guy that was going to have gastric bypass surgery. The email talked about a guy that weighed 73 stone, and talked about how the guy ate 30,000 calories a day. This guy is going to get gastric bypass surgery since he is considered to be super morbidly obese.

In the article, the guy talks about how he just sits in his bed and eats all day.

All he does is eat and watch TV.

No diets seem to work, and he is so big that he can’t get out of bed and do any sort of exercises. They had to cut a hole in the wall, and used a fork lift to get him out of his house. Oh yeah, after they got him to the hospital, they cut of 15 stone worth of tumors etc. from his body.

I had several questions when I read over the article:

  • How many pounds is a stone?
  • 1 stone is equivalent to 14 pounds. The guy weighed in at 1022 lbs.
  • 30,000 calories A DAY??? How do you eat 30,000 calories a day?
  • He at nothing but fried foods, fast food and delivery. He had pizza, chinese food, fried chicken, etc. delivered to the house (and directly to his room I imagine) and ate it.
  • What does this guy do for a living, that he can afford all that food?
  • They never mentioned what he did, or how he financed his eating.
  • How did anyone let him get that big?
  • They never really mentioned it, but apparently he is married and his wife takes care of him.

Another interesting item that they mentioned in the article is that they cut off 210 lbs worth of tumors from the his body.

This article left me flabbergasted.

How does someone get that big? I mean, I’m seriously out of shape, and trying to get in better shape, and I recognize what my body looks like.

I can’t imagine the mental anguish this guy must’ve had about seeing himself just “balloon” for lack of a better term. You’d think that when he got to 500lbs, he would’ve thought, well, I should do something about this weight. I hope he gets the mental help that he needs, because his mental needs are probably just as bad as his physical needs. Here are some before and after pictures of the guy:

It never ceases to amaze me how big we can get as humans. I’m not going to compare myself to this guy, all I can say is that I hope that he gets the help that he needs, whatever fashion that help needs to be in. I’d love to see another picture of this guy a year from now so I can see how much weight he has lost.

  1. This is really sad. The before and after pictures make me believe that he is dealing with some major issues that have contributed to emotional eating. Gastric bypass will not solve those emotional issues. In fact, if he overeats after that surgery he could burst his stomach. I hope that his friends and family start to help him instead of continuing to enable him to lead this unhealthy, life-threatening, and depressing lifestyle.
