United Airlines increasing fares, but only for fat people

That’s the headline that I’d love to see. Of course, “newspapers” and other organizations won’t quite put it like that out of fear of offending someone, but really we’re all thinking that.

See this article about United Airlines charging fat people more for a plane ticket as prima fascia evidence of what I’m talking about.

I’m not entirely opposed to United charging more, based on the volume of space that you occupy on the plane. I’m fat, and I probably use up more than my fair share of the volume of the plane/seat.

Of course, a large percentage of the US population is fat, so the argument could be made that the seats on the plane are too small for the “average” American, but that’s a whole other story altogether. I wonder how they are going to define “obese” are they going to use BMI, body weight, or some other type of measurement?

Surely, a 300 lb body builder that is solid muscle is not obese, but I’m sure that they can occupy just as much space on the plane as a 300 lb fat man that doesn’t exercise at all. What about pregnant women that would otherwise fit in a seat, will they have to buy another seat? What about anorexic people that think they’re fat but really aren’t? Will they have the option of paying for another seat, just so they can validate their body dysmorphia?

I’d hate having to be the guy that tells a PMS’ing woman that she’s going to have to pay for another seat because she’s too fat to fit in one seat.

What do you think about this? Am I, as usual, completely off my rocker?
