How GPS tracking ruined my run

10 June 2009 2 Comments

I went out on my former “regular route” around my neighborhood yesterday. The route is essentially a loop that takes me out from the north side of the neighborhood to the freeway service road and then back in to the neighborhood from the south side.

Last year, or maybe the year before that, I measured the route using Google Maps, and came up with a distance of 3.01 miles. I thought cool, I’m running what is essentially a 5k for training and had warm fuzzies all over for that, until yesterday’s run.

What happened was that I went out on that route with my iPhone GPS tracking my run using the Run Keeper application.  For the record, I love GPS tracking of my runs. I really like being able to see what distance I’ve covered at what pace etc. and I also like being able to see “exactly” the route that I took.

It turns out, my 3.01 mile route, is actually 2.2 miles.  I think I may need to run it again, just to confirm the distance with a second measure, but now I’m kinda bummed about my previous runs not being as long as I thought they were.

I don’t think it really matters in the grand scheme of things, but still, I thought that I had managed to get myself in decent shape before based on what I thought was a 3 mile run. That’s how GPS tracking ruined my run.

That’s a huge discrepancy! I’m curious to find out if it’s poor Google Map skillz or a crappy iPhone app.

I’ve also mapped out runs with Google Maps and they match pretty closely with my Forerunner. Since you usually seem to know what you’re doing on computers I’m guessing your GM skillz are OK and the iPhone or app is crap–maybe its losing GPS signal and taking shortcuts?

Prolly crappy google map skillz. I was looking at this some more and figured that my track on google maps was different than the actual one that I took. I still surprised that it was that much different.
