Training dilemma

12 August 2009 No Comment

So, I’m facing a dilemma with my training. I’m at a point where I’m getting results, but I fear that my results are not as good as they could be. I feel certain that I can do more and better, but I have doubts.

There are some certainties about my training

  • I know that if I ate better, I’d get better results.
  • I know that I need to increase my long run distance.
  • I know that I need to vary my workouts, and not just the locations of the runs, but the types of runs as well.
  • I know I need to work my core and the rest of my body as well.
  • I love swimming, I’m good at it too.
  • If I’m going to do a tri, I need a bike.
  • I don’t know how to plan a menu.

There are also some uncertainties:

  • I don’t know where I’m going to get the money to buy a bike.
  • I can’t train myself, and I can’t afford to get a trainer.
  • What’s the best food to eat for my weight loss and fitness goals?
  • What are the best workouts that I can do on my own, in the woods that will work my core and the rest of my body?
  • What are ways that I can earn money to pay for a trainer? The ads on this site aren’t producing me enough regular revenue, plus there’s a long lag time (90 days) between when I earn enough for a check and when I get my check.

I’m at a cross roads with my training. I know that I need to “kick it up a notch” but I don’t have the financial resources to do so. I wanted to join Austin Fit and train for the marathon in February, but training in Austin will take too much time away from my weekend time with my kids. If I could train in Kyle or San Marcos, that’d be ideal.

I do know that I want to continue training, and I will meet my goal of finishing an ultra marathon before I turn 40 next year, I’m just starting to feel like I need to do more. I need to do more, but what shape should that “more” take?
