30 Seconds with Zak

6 September 2009 One Comment

9444473_b8b9779f2fMy friend Zak, is a bad ass. There’s no other way to put it.

He’s the kind of guy that can change your plans, change your entire outlook and literally change your life in one conversation. He’s also a former pastor at my church.  I say former, because he left to plant a new church just north of San Antonio, TX in Cibolo.

Zak is the kind of guy that leaves you with no doubt about where he stands on issues. When he commits to something, he commits to it, wholeheartedly, hook line and sinker.  He has his own style, always in your face, but never confrontational or condescending.

This morning, he came to preach at my home church in Kyle, TX. Zak and I had a 30 second conversation that has completely changed the way that I’m going to approach my fitness goals from here on out.

What happened?

He asked me 1 question. He said:

I hear that your training for a race. What race have you registered for?

Just like that, my whole fitness plans came crumbling down. The words “what race have you registered for?” broke down my until now quasi commitment.

You see, if I were really committed, I’d be registered for a race. I’d be training with a more specific goal in mind than “before I turn 40.”

Zak would’ve already registered for his race and would have a complete workout plan that he’d follow to the letter and nothing would keep him from it. That’s the kind of guy that he is. That’s how he makes commitments.

I want to be more like Zak.

30 seconds with Zak, and everything is different now.

I have until September 30 to come up with 100 bones to register for the Austin Marathon in February of 2010. I think the marathon will be a nice training run on my way to an ultra. Thank you Zak for helping me focus.
