P90X Fitness Video Review – First Impression

p90x-1

OK, first, a disclaimer. I’m not being paid for this review, nor am I receiving any other kind of compensation for writing this. This is simply my opinion of the P90X fitness videos and workout plan. Your mileage may vary, as they say.

With that out of the way, let me just say that I was very happy to get the package in the mail. My girlfriend and I both gleefully opened the box and watched the first video which is titled “Bring it.”

That first video is essentially an overview video. They go over how the exercise program works, what is expected of you and they also start talking about the supplements that they sell and why you need to buy them and use them.

Before I forget, they also cover how to safely use the chin up bar, which we didn’t get, and they go over the obligatory “check with your doctor” warning and a “this program isn’t for everyone” disclaimer.  In my experience this is so far pretty standard for at home exercise programs.

The P90X books

package

The program comes with an exercise book and also a diet guide. Both of the books are riddled with spelling mistakes. My inner grammar police just won’t let me not mention that.

The diet book, seems to have been written for people that have a cook, or a nutritionist, or have a lot of time on their hands to prepare and cook all the meals. I don’t think it’s realistic to expect someone to have the time to prepare the meticulous meals that they have in the guide, but then again, it may be just my schedule and cooking skills that won’t allow for that.

No worries, the diet guide has a section about what to eat at fast food restaurants, which I thought was clever. Enough about the books, I’ll talk some more about them in a future post.

P90X exercises

Fast forward to this morning when we did our first session. We did the “Core Synergistics” workout and all I can say is “ouch.” It’s not so much that the exercises are hard, because they are. It’s not so much that some of them have weird names, because they do. It’s not so much that the exercises are hard, wait, I think I already said that.

The workout was intense. If it’s any indication of the other P90X videos, wow. This first session was all about working the core, improving flexibility and just making you more solid in the mid-section.

Tony, the instructor, is really good about telling you how to modify the exercises to your fitness level. I feel he does a good job of encouraging you to work towards the goal of doing the exercises just like they do in the videos and telling you what to be mindful of as you hold certain positions.

Bottom line, so far so good. I know it’s only been one day, but I think the hardest thing going forward is going to be keeping the momentum going and staying faithful to the goals we set out.

In the “Bring it” video, they encourage you to take your before picture and they show you how to pose etc. I will not be posting those pictures, thank you very much. At the end of 90 days I may change my mind about it, but for now, if you want to get an idea about what I look like, with my shirt on, look at the picture on the “About me” page.

We’ll see how things turn out.

take it off! take it off! Big Sexy, i’m so proud! do it for us chunky monkeys everywhere…

Speaking of being riddled with grammatical errors; 4th paragraph, last line, it’s either “an” and “program”, no “s” or “any” and “programs” with the “s”. also i’m pretty sure “at home” should be hyphenated. There are no commas necessary in the sentence that begins “the diet book” and “maybe” in the fragment “it maybe just my schedule” should just be “may”. If you’d rather keep “maybe”, then it should be “may be”.

LOL! just being a pain cuz you brought it up. :)

    you rock!
